An important factor in determining a web page's placement in search results is Page Rank. Page Rank is a numeric representation, on a scale of 0 to 10, that symbolizes how important a particular page is on the web. Google's philosophy is that when one page links to a second page, it is "casting a vote" for that second page. The reasoning is that the more votes a page receives, the more important the page must be. The more important a page becomes, the more important its vote is when cast for another page. One way to picture it, is as a large corporation's shareholder's meeting. Each shareholder votes according to the number of shares held. The more shares held by a shareholder, the more weight the vote carries.
Page Rank is not the only factor used in determining a page's importance but it is one of the main factors used to determine a page's placement in search results.
